Again a difficult question! Sportswise it would be Michael Johnson, the guy is/was a legend!
Science wise it is Steve Sparks, a geologist who became a full professor at 28, what a brain! He really revolutionised how we think volcanoes work, had loads of research papers published in Nature, the best academic journal you can have your work in, he is an absolute legend!
I think it’s probably my mum who is also a scientist, she’s a botanist but also a fire investigator. She’s run her own business for about 35 years and is really really good at her job !
My best friend, Dr David Phiilips, from school, is my inspiration. He did a doctorate in biology, studying wood wasps. He went on to work as an expert for the Scottish National Heritage. Sadly, despite being a non-smoker and healthy living person, he died from a brain tumour, 8 years ago, aged just 39. I was really affected by his passing. Remembering him from our times at school and doing our science ‘A’ levels, his death was such a waste. However, my inspiration, to study for my Masters degree and to now try for a PhD, is his will to have succeeded. I try to make the most of every opportunity now. None of us know what the future holds and I don’t want to waste my chances to learn more and enjoy life.
Thank you for a really good question, which has given me the chance to pay a tribute to my best friend.
Brian Cox or Darwin. Brian presents many astronomy and physics programs on TV, and he is so enthusiastic and great at explaining complex concepts simply. Darwin was amazing for his beliefs and views, and the guts to express them amongst a society that was mostly against him.
