• Question: Would you recommend the Forensic Science course to interested students? Is it a factual course? Does it have 'mock' tests? Why would you recommend it?

      Hello bones,

      Nice moniker! I would indeed, it’s a science subject so it is numerate and dips into a lot of different subjects which i enjoy, e.g. chemistry, biology, physics, maths etc., as well as having a practical application – you can do indoor or outdoor scene investigations and gain some understanding of how CSIs, the law and science can all work for the greater good.

      Most courses are split into different learning modules with different themes, with assessment usually split between practical tests, coursework and exams. I did a exam preparation session today actually for our final year forensic science undergraduate students so they have an idea what to expect.

      So yes, I would recommend it!

      Hello Bones,
      Firstly, which course? I lecture on collision investigation and associated forensic science to a National Diploma course, amongst others. Or do you mean a degree course, at uni?

      My simple answer is, if you are interested, then go for it. You will find, without doubt, that it is more interesting than you first thought – very un-CSI like, but very rewarding.

      hi Bones. Lots of forensic science courses mock up case work so that the students can get a feel for real life. In our course we also use a lot of real case work (case files and photographs and so on) that the staff have been involved in to let the students see and experience the real work. So the answer to your question is that it depends on the corse and the experience of the teachers

      Hi

      The forensic biology degree at portsmouth is accredited by the forensic science society in the UK, and is excellent for teaching crime scene examination, entomology, DNA testing, pathology and trace evidence. We do have a mock court room and crime scene house also!

      Forensic science courses include other techniques involving chemistry and physics, such as blood splatter analysis, trace evidence (like paint), traffic collisions etc, so it depends on what you are interested in.
