All research is expensive. Luckily for me the University and a few grants pay my time to do research, but still doing the work incurs costs which need to be covered. For example, the equipment I use costs £10,000+, the local weather station needs maintenance, tape measures keep breaking, you can see the pattern!

I can usually cover things like replacement batteries, tape measures and other small items from small funds, but actually buying pigs is relatively expensive so £500 would go a long way to continuing my research.

A new research thought I just had, in reply to your question, was to to bury the pigs and build a patio on top of them – a common way that murderers try to cover their tracks – so I could geophysically monitor them and tell forensic investigators when the optimum time would be to do a forensic geophysical survey.

      Hi

Do you mean the prize money? I would love to win it to help students! Getting young people to appreciate the usefulness of science it so important for the future. Forensics has real-world application, and doesnt just make brilliant TV.

My aim for the money is to design and run a ‘forensic boot camp’ which we will open to local school. Students will complete an entry form, which may include a forensic puzzle, and we will judge the competition. The best results will earn those students a place on the camp.

On the camp, we will introduce students to crime scene evidence collection, as well as processing, examination and interpretation. Final presentations to the class and/or a mock court room appearance, with the best student possibly getting a prize will finish the camp.

      Hope this helps!

      Hello Tomtom,

I would love the money, but my local primary and junior school needs it more, to allow them to buy science equipment. In turn, this will hopefully allow young people to explore and enjoy science for themselves, to inspire them to study and want to work in science.
It is a very big subject and I believe that there is something to interest everyone. After all, science is all around us.

Give the schools the money they need for equipment and this will allow teachers to enthuse and interest their classes to enjoy science.

      Thank you for your question.

      Mark.

I don’t need the money but I would like it so that I can give more schools the opportunity to teach forensic science in their classrooms so that more people are interested in science.

HI Tomtom – I’d like to use the money to work with our local science centre here in Glasgow to set up some exhibits that explain some of the aspects of forensic science to school students such as yourself.
