Are we talking in terms of personal win or research grant win?
Personally, I would buy a nice 4 bed family home and a chalet in Chamonix. I would then go on a skiing holiday to canada, and that would be it all gone!
In terms of research, I would get my fly sequenced so that i could examine its gene expression easier, which can be used to help determine age and time since death. Getting that done, purchasing the equipment and paying myself a salary as well as other researchers needed, that would all be gone there too!
Well apart from paying off the mortgage I’d probably use it to set up a ‘forensic geophysics research institute’ and get lots of young enquiring minds to really push this area of science significantly forwards. I’d never give up work, it’s too interesting!
I would pay off my mortgage, which is fortunately very small, that of my family, make sure that I have financial security and give the rest away. That would probably be more than £500 000 pounds, but I am not after the millionaire lifestyle, with fast cars and boats. As long as I have enough to live on, then that is great. I certainly wouldn’t give up work. I have an active mind and it doing nothing would be dangerous, plus my wife wouldn’t want me hanging around all the time! I would like good health and happiness. Money cannot buy that.
