Hi Student 17 – I was really interested in geography in school and thought about being a geologist for a while. I did my PhD in a medical school in Dublin so was surrounded by doctors all the time and thought about doing pathology or anatomy for a while as well, but I’m very happy doing what I do.
I suppose I have always had a connection with science. When I ws younger, I wanted to be a vet but then I did a forensic case study at school and from then on I wanted to be a forensic scientist. I fully intended to leave university and get a job in a lab but when I was offered the opportunity to do a PhD, I couldn’t turn it down. I began teaching alongside my PhD and then in 2007 became a full-time lecturer. I don’t regret not becoming an actual forensic scientist as I enjoy the research side of things and no two days are the same – I think I mind be bored if I worked in a laboratory all day, every day!
Not always, wanted to be a full-time athlete as I have mentioned in other answers! Now I have a young family (2 children) my focu is obviiously on them, and to be the best parent that I can be.
I have had a career interst in science since senior school, wjhen I wanted to go into medicine. However, it was when I came into the police that I found myself with an interst in collision investigation. I think that early sowing of scientific interest into students is very important and never leaves you.
